Book an AppointmentWhat is pelvic girdle pain?
Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) is a common and often debilitating condition during pregnancy, affecting up to one in five pregnant women. It causes pain in the pelvis, lower back, hips and sometimes the inner thighs, and can make simple activities like walking, climbing stairs and turning over in bed extremely difficult.
PGP occurs when the joints of the pelvis, the sacroiliac joints and the pubic symphysis, become less stable under the influence of pregnancy hormones and the growing demands on the body. It can develop at any stage of pregnancy and varies considerably in severity.
The good news is that PGP responds well to osteopathic treatment, and most women find significant improvement with a course of targeted care.
Common symptoms
- Pain in the front of the pelvis (pubic symphysis)
- Pain in the sacroiliac joints or lower back
- Pain that is worse walking, particularly over longer distances
- Difficulty with stairs or getting in and out of a car
- Pain when turning over in bed
- A clicking or grinding sensation in the pelvis
- Pain that is worse with single-leg activities
- Difficulty standing on one leg, such as when dressing
How we can help
Osteopathic treatment for PGP focuses on balancing the pelvis, reducing joint irritation and addressing the muscular imbalances and tension that develop around the pelvis and lower back. Treatment is gentle and adapted to pregnancy at every stage.
We also provide practical advice on activity modification, positions to avoid, sleeping support and exercises to manage symptoms between appointments. For many women, this combination of treatment and self-management makes a significant difference to day-to-day comfort.
