What is tennis elbow?

Tennis elbow is one of the most common overuse injuries we treat, despite the fact that most people who develop it have never played tennis. It is caused by repetitive strain to the tendons that attach to the outside of the elbow, typically from activities that involve gripping, twisting or repeated wrist movement.

Elbow pain can also arise from golfer's elbow (affecting the inside of the elbow), bursitis, referred pain from the neck or shoulder, or compression of the nerves passing through the elbow. Getting the right diagnosis is the first step to effective treatment.

Common symptoms

  • Pain on the outside of the elbow (tennis elbow) or inside (golfer's elbow)
  • Tenderness when pressing on the bony part of the elbow
  • Pain with gripping, lifting or twisting movements
  • Weakness in the hand or wrist
  • Pain that worsens with computer use, DIY or sport
  • Morning stiffness in the elbow
  • Aching that radiates down the forearm
  • Difficulty with everyday tasks like opening jars

How we can help

Treatment for tennis elbow and other elbow conditions at Oak Park Clinic combines soft tissue work to the forearm muscles and tendons, joint mobilisation of the elbow and wrist, and targeted rehabilitation exercises. We also look at the neck and shoulder, which frequently contribute to elbow pain through referred symptoms or altered movement patterns.

We will advise on activity modification and load management to allow the tendon to recover while keeping you as active as possible throughout treatment.

Frequently asked questions

How long does tennis elbow take to recover?
With appropriate treatment, most cases of tennis elbow improve within 6 to 12 weeks. Without treatment, it can persist for much longer. Early intervention and the right rehabilitation approach make a significant difference.
Do I need to stop all activity with tennis elbow?
Not necessarily. We will advise you on which activities to modify or avoid and which are safe to continue. Complete rest is rarely the answer and can actually slow recovery.
